Jes煤s  R.  Oliver

What makes me unique

Prof. Oliver was born and raised in Venezuela 🇻🇪, and lived in México D.F, México 🇲🇽. He is a first generation college graduate, an English as a Second Language learner, a first generation LatinE immigrant, and a researcher. He loves playing with his two kids, visiting his family in Southern California, and reading/learning about mathematical physics. In 2022, Prof. Oliver was the recipient of the MAA Golden Section Haimo Award for Distinguished Teacher of College or University Mathematics. In 2023, Prof. Oliver received the Rosemary and Matthew Spitzer Distinguished Science Faculty Award.

  • Prof. Oliver's primary teaching interest is the development and implementation of inclusive, active learning techniques in the Mathematics classroom. He also enjoys working collaboratively with students on research projects. Dr. Oliver currently focuses on two broad areas of investigation:

    • Wave equations with applications to General Relativity.
    • Implementing and scaling a Community of Practice model to increase Active Learning in college math classrooms.
